Falls

Ferntree Falls

Wander through a towering forest of blue gums to reach Ferntree Waterfall. The one-kilometer, 45-minute return nature walk starts at the Ferntree camping area in Mount Buangor State Park. The walk takes you past three waterfalls, including the Cascade Falls, and offers top views over the fern-lined upper reaches of Middle Creek below.

Nigretta Falls

Nigretta Falls is a little treasure set in stunning scenery. It's considered even more of a stunner than Wannon Falls, thanks to its clearer features.

The small town of Redruth (renamed Wannon in 1908) was settled by Europeans in the 1850s. Built around the Wannon Inn and a ferry for crossing the river, the place had two schools, two pubs, a store, and four sawmills nearby.

Over time, the Falls turned into a top spot for tourists, drawing heaps of visitors in the 1890s when excursion trains came from Hamilton.

Swing by Nigretta Falls for a spot of fishing, picnics, and barbies, just a short detour from the Glenelg Highway. The Wannon River feeds the falls and is a small wonder to behold.

Check out the falls from above and make use of the picnic tables and Barbie facilities, or head down the stairs to the base, where secluded water pools make for great fishing spots.

MacKenzie Falls

Don't forget to feast your eyes on the iconic MacKenzie Falls in the Grampians, one of Victoria's biggest and most spectacular waterfalls. The falls flow all year round, with water tumbling over huge cliffs into a deep pool, sending up fine sprays of rainbow mist into the air above a stunning gorge.

To see the falls, take the easy one-kilometre path to the viewing platform at the Bluff (wheelchair accessible), or take the steep trail to the base of the falls (30 minutes one way).

MacKenzie Falls car park is a forty-minute drive from Halls Gap on Mount Victory Road.

Wannon Falls

Wannon Falls, in the Southern Grampians, offers an amazing sight with water cascades over a 30-meter vertical cliff and falls into a deep plunge pool below, just 20 km west of Hamilton, Wannon Falls was formed by a basalt lava flow that surged upstream to the Wannon River. Further downstream, rapids wind their way around large blocks of basalt, dislodged over time down the narrow valley.

The story of Wannon and Nigretta Falls goes back to the 1850s when the small town of Redruth, renamed Wannon in 1908, was first settled. Built around the Wannon Inn and a ferry for crossing the river, the community had two schools, two pubs, a store, and four sawmills nearby.

The turn-off to Wannon Falls is 19 km west of Hamilton, just off the Glenelg Highway. A scenic road links Wannon Falls and the neighboring Nigretta Falls.

Both waterfalls are at their best after a winter or spring soaking.

Beehive Falls Trail

A gently rolling walking track follows Mud Hut Creek upstream to a series of rock steps and on to Beehive Falls (best after rain). Enjoy the pretty rock pools and ferns. The base of the falls makes a peaceful spot to rest up. Head back the way you came.
